چکیده

We have performed a search for old planetary nebu-lae around hot white dwarfs by direct Hα narrow-band imaging. The 16 examined objects are white dwarfs representing different spectral subtypes, comprising DA and various non-DA stars, among them being PG 1159 stars and white dwarfs exhibiting spectral signatures of ongoing mass-loss by ultra-hot winds. The search was entirely negative – with one possible exception: PG 0109+111, which is the most massive DO white dwarf known (M=0.74 M) and among the hottest DOs (T eff =110 000 K). An asymmetric nebulosity extends about 5 from the star to the southwest , and there are hints that it extends even further out. If our detection is in fact the first definite case of a PN around a DO white dwarf it needs to be investigated by detailed spectroscopic observations.

A&a Manuscript No. Narrow-band Imaging and a Search for Planetary Nebulae ?

We summarize the results of narrow-band (H and O III] 5007 A) imaging of eight planetary neb-ulae taken during recent observing campaigns: We present the probably largest known PN, MWP 1, with a linear diameter of about 6 pc. We show rst narrow-band images of He 2-437, MeWe 1-5, MeWe 1-8, MeWe 1-9, NGC 1360, and of { like we term them { the \Galactic footballs" A 43 and NGC 7094. We report abou...

Discovery of photospheric argon in very hot central stars of planetary nebulae and white dwarfs

Context. We report the first discovery of argon in hot evolved stars and white dwarfs. We have identified the Ar  1063.55 Å line in some of the hottest known (Teff = 95 000−110 000 K) central stars of planetary nebulae and (pre-) white dwarfs of various spectral type. Aims. We determine the argon abundance and compare it to theoretical predictions from stellar evolution theory as well as fro...

Observed Planetary Nebulae as Descendants of Interacting Binary Systems

We examine recent studies on the formation rate of planetary nebulae and find this rate to be about one-third of the formation rate of white dwarfs. This implies than only about one-third of all planetary nebulae that evolve to form white dwarfs are actually bright enough to be observed. This finding corresponds with the claim that it is necessary for a binary companion to interact with the asy...

A Spitzer Search for Infrared Excesses around Massive Young White Dwarfs

We examine 14 hot white dwarfs for signs of infrared excess using the Spitzer Space Telescope. Twelve of the objects are massive white dwarfs which have been suggested to be the result of binary mergers. The remaining two objects are undermassive white dwarfs which again may be the result of mergers or the inspiral of a substellar companion. In no case do we find any evidence for significant in...

New Spectral Analyses of Pre-white Dwarfs

The very hot, H-deecient PG 1159 stars are found in the post-AGB region of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Most likely the \born-again" post-AGB scenario is valid for their evolution. It predicts a nal He-ash which brings back the star to the AGB, followed by a second (He burning) descent from the AGB where a superwind may take oo the entire H-rich and most of the He-rich envelope and lay bare...
